1. What does organic mean?
Organic products are produced without the use of pesticides, chemicals, or other harmful substances. From start to finish, beginning from the time of plant growth until the completion of production, the product is created with the goal of promoting personal and environmental health.
2. How does an organic mattress help a baby with allergies or asthma?
Traditional mattresses are produced with cotton sprayed with pesticides or with polyurethane foam, and then coated with additional chemicals to promote fire retardancy. Fumes from these chemicals can irritate the eyes and nose of the baby, as well as cause breathing problems. Organic mattresses are completely free of pesticides and chemicals which have also been proven to increase the risk of SIDS, aside from being allergenic substances. By eliminating these potential hazards, we’re decreasing the risk of SIDS and allowing your baby to breathe in nothing more than fresh, clean air.
3. Is there really a correlation between the type of mattress you use and SIDS?
According to many studies and documented research, most notably those performed by Dr. T. James Sprott of New Zealand and Barry Richardson of England, SIDS is a result of accidental poisoning: the babies inhale fumes emanating from the mattresses, which are byproducts of the chemicals used during growth of the cotton and production of the mattresses.
4. Are your mattresses just as firm and comfortable as regular ones?
Greenbuds mattresses are designed to promote both your child’s health and comfort. The Coconut Coir in our crib mattresses provides an extra firm sleeping surface for infants, while the 1″ layer of All Natural Latex provides a firm yet very conforming sleeping surface for toddlers. We use Dunlop Processed Latex, which provides bouyant cushioning to support proper spinal alignment and to cushion growing joints and bones.Plus, both our Organic Cotton and Organic Wool quilted covers are made with plush quilting, for optimum comfort.
5. Why is it important for a mattress to be moisture resistant?
If a mattress is not moisture resistant, then it absorbs all liquid, such as urine and saliva. These substances cause fungus and bacteria to grow inside the mattress and produce toxic fumes, which are dangerous and harmful to your child. Our Organic Mattresses are naturally water resistant, specifically our Deluxe mattress models in which the wool naturally wicks away any excess moisture. Furthermore, all of our mattresses have a removable, washable cover so you can keep them clean and hygenic.
6. How are your mattresses good for the environment?
Aside from decreasing the usage of pesticides and chemicals and reducing the amount of harmful substances in our air and environment, Greenbuds mattresses are completely biodegradable. In addition, all our mattresses come packaged in polyethylene plastic and a recyclable cardboard box, continuing our commitment to the environment’s wellbeing.
7. If my baby is allergic to latex, can s/he use a Greenbuds Mattress?
The latex allergy is triggered by the protein within the latex. The proteins in any Greenbuds latex are thoroughly washed out, effectively removing the allergens in them. Furthermore, Latex allergies are only provoked when a person comes into direct contact with latex products. Greenbuds utilizes a safe design to securely cover any latex-based materials contained in the product. If your child has a known latex allergy that is severe, we suggest you consult with your pediatritian before putting the baby on the mattress.
8. If my baby is allergic to wool, can s/he use Greenbuds products?
Wool is only an allergen when it’s not organic. The wool used in all of our products is 100% organic, so this won’t be an issue.
9. How do Greenbuds mattresses comply with US standards for being fire retardant?
Greenbuds mattresses are Consumer Safety Product Commission compliant. They are made of organic and all-natural components, free of any synthetic or chemical components. The wool in our deluxe mattresses acts as a natural fire retardant, while our cotton covers are treated with a form of boiron, which is a naturally derived mineral that acts as a fire retardant in a completely non-toxic format.
10. When should I flip my baby’s Greenbuds mattress?
Babies should start on the harder side of the mattress, with the coconut coir facing up. Once your child turns two, you can flip the mattress so your baby sleeps on the softer, latex side.
11. Are Greenbuds mattresses water resistant?
Our removable mattress covers are highly water resistant. The wool in our Deluxe Covers has a natural tendency to wick any excess moisture, while our Organic Cotton Quilted Covers are quilted with double layers of organic cotton and woven in a tight weave so as to make it very absorbent. And most importantly, our mattress covers are removable and washable may the need arise. For those of you that are wondering why we don’t make them waterproof, we would like to add that there is unfortunately now way to make a mattress waterproof while staying committed to our organic standards. Water barriers are typically made of synthetic materials which are also highly flammable.
12. If the mattress and cover are water resistant, should I buy a mattress protector as well?
Our mattress covers are water resistant as well as removable and washable, so technically you can get away with just the mattress and cover. However, for convenience sake, we do recommend an additional mattress cover on top of it, which makes for an easier change during midnight leaks
